Written in 1864 in response to at the very time pretrib was being born

"For some years past, this valuable book--the first edition of which was issued in the year 1864--has been out of print; and it now appears to be a duty, in response to the request of many who greatly value it, to issue a second edition. This is the more needful as the errors of prophetic teaching which it was written to meet, have suffered no decadence, but, on the contrary, have developed ampler proportions, and extended over a wider sphere of influence than could have been supposed possible at first by those who, like Dr. Tregelles, were acquainted with the circumstances of their origin and early dissemination.

Preface to the Second Edition,
The Hope of Christ's Coming London, W.
October, 1886

Samuel P. Tregelles, respected nineteenth century theologian and biblical scholar, lived during the rapid growth in popularity of the "secret rapture" teaching, now refined into what we know today as the pretribulation rapture position. The Hope of Christ's Coming is his response to this position, and as someone intimately acquainted with its birth, his analysis should be seriously considered by all students of prophecy today. "Now learn the parable from the fig tree: When its branch has already become tender and puts forth its leaves, you know that summer is near; so, you too, when you see all these things, recognize that he is near, right at the doorÓ (Matthew 24:32, 33).
